Planning an island trip this summer? You can witness the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea in Shodoshima, which resemble the beauty of Greece. This island boasts destinations and landscapes that will transport you to Milos, Greece. Shodoshima is famous for its warm climate throughout the year, making it an ideal place for growing olives, earning the name "Olive Island."

Growing up adoring the movie "Mamma Mia!" and visiting Shodoshima for its Greek-inspired scenery was a dream come true. In this blog post, I'll take you through the island's beautiful blue and white landscapes, including the famous "Angel Road."
Access
Shodoshima Island is a sizeable outlying island in the Setouchi Sea, renowned for the famous Setouchi Triennale. The island is an excellent destination for a day trip from Okayama Prefecture, Kagawa Prefecture, or even Osaka. It is reachable via ferry from Takamatsu in approximately an hour. It is best to visit during the early to late summer when the greenery is abundant.
There are ferries from Okayama, Himeji, Kobe, and Kobe to Shodoshima.
Going around
The easiest way to access different locations during summer is by renting a car. There are various car rental shops in front of the port, but make sure to book a car beforehand.
Other means: bus, bicycle
Where to Stay

If you're searching for accommodation with an amazing ocean view that includes the Angel Road, I highly recommend staying at Shodoshima International Hotel. Spending a night on the island can help you make the most of your visit, particularly if you're traveling from Kansai.
Access: From Tonosho Port
By car: 6 min
By bus: 20 min
Exploring around
Shodoshima Olive Park

This park, designed in the Greek style, boasts around 2,000 olive trees and is situated on top of a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The main attraction for most tourists is a beautiful windmill that resembles the one from Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service." You'll come across many people dressed in a headband with a bow and holding a broomstick, recreating the iconic scene from the movie.

Photo spots:
Angel Road

A mysterious sand road connecting four islands from Bentenjima to Shodoshima appears twice daily when the tide is low. The port usually announces the visiting hours, so make sure to check once you arrive.
Legend says that if you walk across holding your special someone's hand, an angel will descend and grant your wish. It is also recognized as one of Japan's 'Lovers Holy Lands' and is a popular proposal spot. You can purchase an 'ema' plaque from the shops near Angel Road, which you can write your wish on and leave at a shrine.
